Many other local jurisdictions already using social media channels
SUMMIT COUNTY — The Summit County Sheriff’s Office is the first countywide entity to start broadcasting via a Twitter channel. According to Sheriff John Minor, the SCSO is now posting information as @SummitSheriffCO. Tweets will include emergency alerts, public service announcements and other notifications.
The Twitter account will be used to supplement existing methods of information dissemination, such as SCAlert and traditional news releases.
“This is just one more tool to help us get the right information to the right people at the right time,” said Minor.
The account will be monitored as often as possible; however it will not be monitored 24 hours a day. Please use 911, not Twitter, to report a crime or an emergency.
Though more and more people are relying on Twitter to get timely information updates, no other official county information is currently being released via Twitter. It could be useful to announce county commissioner meetings and agenda items, planning commission meetings and even open space advisory council meetings.
Given the county’s budget situation, it’s not likely there will be any resources available to start exploring social media, which is too bad, because the county will be well behind the curve on this emerging way of communicating with constituents and citizens.
